Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅔ cup brown sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • ¾ cup butter, softened
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (approximately 14 ounces)

Mix-ins and Toppings

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans
  • 8-ounce package toffee bits, divided

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, stir together the flour, salt, and brown sugar. This forms the base of your crumbly dough.
  2. Incorporate butter: Cut the softened butter into the dry mixture until it is crumbly in texture. Use your hands or a pastry cutter to ensure even mixing.
  3. Add egg and mix-ins: Mix in the slightly beaten egg thoroughly with your hands. Then fold in 1 ½ cups of the chocolate chips and all of the chopped pecans to evenly distribute.
  4. Reserve dough: Set aside 1 ½ cups of this dough mixture for the topping later.
  5. Prepare base crust: Press the remaining dough evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan to form the crust layer.
  6. Bake crust: Bake the crust at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes until it just begins to set but is not fully baked through.
  7. Add sweetened condensed milk: Remove the crust from the oven and pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the warm crust surface to create a rich layer.
  8. Layer toppings: Sprinkle all but ¼ cup of the toffee bits evenly over the condensed milk layer. Then drop small pieces of the reserved dough over the top, followed by sprinkling the remaining ½ cup chocolate chips across the bars.
  9. Bake again: Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes until the bars turn golden brown and the top is set.
  10. Final toffee sprinkle: Once out of the oven, immediately sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup of toffee bits over the hot bars to allow them to slightly melt into the topping.
  11. Cool and serve: Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan to set properly before slicing and serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use room temperature butter for easiest incorporation and best crumb texture.
  • For nut allergies, the pecans can be omitted or replaced with seeds like sunflower or pumpkin seeds.
  • Ensure to cool bars fully to avoid crumbling when slicing.
  • These bars can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated for up to a week.
