Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough

  • 1 lb store-bought pizza dough (or homemade dough)
  • Flour for dusting

For the Filling

  • 1 lb ribeye or sirloin steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Assembly

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp water
  • Marinara sauce, for dipping

Instructions

  1. Prep the Filling: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, bell peppers, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Sauté until the vegetables are caramelized and tender, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and sear the steak slices over high heat for 2 to 3 minutes until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Remove and set aside.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). On a lightly floured surface, stretch or roll out the pizza dough into a 12 by 16-inch rectangle, ensuring even thickness for uniform baking.
  3. Layer the Goodness: Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheeses over the dough, leaving about a 1-inch border around the edges. Next, evenly distribute the cooked steak slices and caramelized vegetable mixture on top of the cheese layer.
  4. Roll It Up: Starting from the long side of the rectangle, tightly roll the dough into a log shape, pressing edges together to seal completely to prevent filling from escaping during baking.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Place the rolled stromboli seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Brush this over the entire surface of the dough for a glossy golden finish. Cut 3 to 4 slits on top to allow steam to escape while baking. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crisp.
  6. Rest & Slice: Remove stromboli from the oven and allow it to cool for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping and enjoy.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, consider adding mushrooms or spinach to the filling.
  • Don’t overfill the stromboli to avoid burst seams during baking.
  • Use freshly grated mozzarella cheese for better melting and flavor.
  • The egg wash ensures a beautiful, shiny, golden crust.
  • Leftover stromboli can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven to restore crispness.
