This Chicken Gyros with Creamy Feta Tzatziki recipe offers a delicious and easy way to enjoy traditional Greek flavors at home. Marinated chicken thighs are cooked to juicy perfection, then wrapped in warm pita bread with a vibrant, creamy tzatziki sauce made from Greek yogurt and feta cheese, complemented by fresh vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken Marinade

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Tzatziki Sauce

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Assembly

  • 4 pita breads
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cucumber, diced
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl, combine olive oil, dried oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Add the chicken thighs and coat them well with the marinade. Cover and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes to absorb all the flavors.
  2. Cook the Chicken: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the marinated chicken thighs for about 5-7 minutes on each side until they develop a golden brown crust and reach an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C), ensuring they are fully cooked.
  3. Prepare Tzatziki Sauce: While the chicken cooks, mix together the Greek yogurt, crumbled feta cheese, lemon juice, minced garlic, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Stir until the sauce is smooth and creamy.
  4. Slice the Chicken: Once the chicken is cooked and rested for a couple of minutes, slice it into thin strips suitable for assembling the gyros.
  5. Assemble the Gyros: Warm the pita breads briefly if desired. Spread a generous amount of the creamy feta tzatziki sauce onto each pita, then layer with sliced chicken, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, and thinly sliced red onion. Garnish with fresh parsley, roll up the pita, and enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, marinate chicken overnight in the refrigerator.
  • You can substitute chicken thighs with chicken breasts if preferred, but thighs stay juicier.
  • Warm the pita breads before assembling for a softer wrap.
  • Adjust the garlic amount in tzatziki according to your taste.
  • Leftover cooked chicken can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
